座右の銘を持っている人は、芯の通った人であると思う。
自分の中で大切にしていることがあり、常にそれを意識し、自分のことを客観視する。
たかが座右の銘だと思うだろう。
しかしたった一つの言葉を持っているかもっていないかだけで大きく人生とういうものは変わっていくのである。
常識などとういう混沌としたものではなく、自分のルーラーを持つことが重要である。
そのルーラーで自分自身をはかり、間違いがないかの確認をするのである。
その作業は自分と向きあう時間である。
不安というものは、周りの物事がもたらすものではなく、自分自身の中から湧き出てくるものである。どれだけ周りの環境を排除してもその不安は自分自身をなくさない限りはなくならないのだ。だからこそ、悲しい出来事は起こってしまうのだ。
時には、その不安から逃げることがあるかもしれない。しかしそれでは何の解決にもならないのである。不安から逃げるとまたどこかでその不安と向き合わなければならないときが必ずやってくるのだ。
つまり、私たちは不安から逃げるのではなく、少しずつ受け入れ、自分自身を変えていく他、方法はないのだ。
その時に座右の銘があれば、過去の人の力を借りることができ、孤独と闘うよりも簡単にその壁を乗り越えることができるのだ。
私たちには過去の人々の叡智がある。
若い。ただそれだけで大きな価値と可能性に満ち溢れているのだ。そのことを多くの学生に知ってもらいたい。今多くの功績を残している方の知識を自由に使うこともできる。また、情報処理能力の向上により、１世紀前には一生かけてもでき得なかったことが数時間で終えることも可能になっているのだ。
シャルトルの言葉、我々は巨人の肩に乗っているから遠くを見ることができるという言葉は、いつの時代においても心に響く言葉だと思う。
今を生きていることに感謝し、自分の可能性をしっかりと見つめなおし、自身の役割を考えるきっかけになればと思う。私もその若い世代にいい影響が与えられるよう、日々行動していく所存である。
