私は元々、感染症に関する本を読み、興味を抱き、大学受験の末、同じサイエンスの中でも動物を離れて植物に関する研究をするようになった。

正直、植物に対する興味は全くなかった。単純に当時の私には、「動物＞植物」という愚かな考えがあったことは否定できない。そんな時にカンファレンスでお会いした京都大の教授からいただいた本が、180度、私の考え方を変えたとまではいかないが、その出会いによって、私は植物というものの面白さを知り、夢中になることになった。

近頃、大学の授業はオンラインになったということで大学進学に価値を見出さない人も多いだろう。

そのことに関しては多いに賛成だ。対面授業であるかないかに拘わらずである。

必ずしも、高校卒業時点で大学に行く必要はない。今もそうだが、社会人でも大学に行くという選択をとる人もいるし、平日の午前中の私の仕事は社会人受験生の指導である。

話は戻るが、教授は牧野富太郎という植物分類学者の著書を与えてくれた。

そこには植物に対する愛が描かれていた。

彼の思う植物への感情を見ていると、そこからは対等の関係が見えてくる。

しかしそこには自分の個人的な感情もあり、その当時の私は自分に足りないものに気づかされるのであった。

自分の能力不足を棚にあげて、自分のやりたいことではないというひねくれの気持ちがあったのだと、今になれば素直に言えるのだが。

人間は生きているから食物をとらねばならぬ、人間は裸だから衣物を着けねばならぬ。人間は風雨を防ぎ寒暑をしのがねばならぬから家を建てねばならぬのでそこで始めて人間と植物との間に交渉があらねばならぬ必要が生じてくる。（本文抜粋）

交渉という言葉は、私にとって驚きであった。そしてその言葉や彼が紡ぐ言葉が、私の研究に彩りを与えてくれたことは紛れもない事実である。

ちなみに彼は小学校を中退した変わり者である。そして独学で植物学を学んだ。まさに、植物そのものが彼の師なのである。

そんな彼を見ていると、今、ユーチューバーになる、学校に行く意味がないと言っている小学生・中学生には気持ちが足りないと思うのだ。

何かをしたいという気持ちではなく、それをしたくないという気持ちで動いている間は、何者にもなれない。

自分の人生にディフェンスなんて必要ない。常にオフェンスの姿勢を忘れてはいけないと、10年経った今、再び彼の作品を読んでは感じるのだ。
